Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Ubuntu on Windows
You can also download and create an Ubuntu installation medium yourself if you wish! Of course, we also offer Bootable USB flash drives if you wish to purchase an installation from us and we can also install the operating system on your device in person (residents of East Longmeadow, MA, Longmeadow, MA, Hampden, MA, Monson, MA, and Wibraham, MA only)!
Step 1: Download Ubuntu
Visit the official Ubuntu website to download the latest version of Ubuntu for your desktop PC or laptop. Please check the System requirements section there before proceeding to make sure your device and its hardware support the operating system.
Step 2: Create a Bootable USB Drive
Use a tool like Rufus or balenaEtcher to create a bootable USB flash drive. Insert your USB drive into the USB port on your device, select the downloaded ISO file, and follow the prompts to create the bootable drive.
Step 3: Boot from USB
Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, or Delete during startup). Change the boot order to prioritize the USB flash drive and save and exit out of the BIOS/UEFI settings to begin booting from the USB-mounted installation medium.
Step 4: Install Ubuntu
Once booted from the USB drive, you will see the Ubuntu installation menu. Select "Install Ubuntu" and follow the on-screen instructions. You can choose to install Ubuntu alongside Windows or erase Windows entirely. Please note, this relies on your selected storage drive having space for both a Windows and Ubuntu partition. Check the Windows and Ubuntu System requirements sections for more info. For simplicity, it is best to install Ubuntu on its own storage drive.
Step 5: Complete the Installation
After selecting your preferences, the installation process will begin. This may take some time, so be patient. Once completed, restart your computer and remove the USB drive when prompted by the computer.
Step 6: Explore Ubuntu
After installation, take some time to explore the Ubuntu interface. Familiarize yourself with the software center, settings, and available applications.

Update Your System
Run system updates to ensure you have the latest security patches and software. You can do this through the Terminal app on the "Show Apps" screen by typing in these commands and pressing enter after each line:
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
This can also be done through the Software Updater app. If you installed Ubuntu's Long-Term Support version (LTS), you may also want to run the following command in the Terminal app:
sudo do-release-upgrade
This will check for a new version of LTS and install it for you if there is one available. Just follow the on-screen prompts if you do this. Furthermore, not all updates require a manual restart of the computer or laptop, but it is advisable to perform a system restart to apply the changes to the system made by the update.
